Exploring Andean Pottery
INTRODUCTION
The Exploring Andean pottery project constitutes a project at the University of California Los Angeles Digital Humanities program. The project emerges in various forms, where members of the project team all assume equal agency on ways in which the project progresses, as well as in its creative direction.
SUMMARY
Stauber, the former head of the Digital Media department for UCLA’s Fowler Museum, and currently a Multimedia Producer at the Los Angeles county Museum of Art, initially approached the DH program with a dataset, which then progressed to the scope it has now. At first, the project aimed to signify the value of visualization through digital tools.
MORE
The data visualizations element of the project provides narratives on Andean cultures, not readily visible initially. This becomes visible in aspects such as the difficulty of identifying relationships and patterns within the dataset by considering each vessel individually. However, digital analysis facilitates this visualizing of data and artifacts. The 3D visualizations element of the project assists the viewer to shift artifacts and to change views and perspectives. Furthermore, the TIME MAPPER assists viewers to conceptualize the locations of the cultures in time and space.
